An AHA Moment In Alaska

By AK Chapter President Sukie Berberich

During my final Qualities of Greatness: Alexander Hamilton presentation to the Colony Middle School's 8th grade American History classes, the teacher called out, "Hey, I just had an 'a-ha' moment! I just now realized why the Coast Guard was under the Department of the Treasury all those years, Alexander Hamilton founded it!"

As I think about Hamilton in the earliest days of our country and his "revenue cutters", I am once again astonished by his genius in creating this branch of our military. Not only was he creating much needed revenue for our fledgling country by patrolling for pirated goods, he was partnering that need with two other important things. First, to survive, The United States of America absolutely had to look and act 100% legitimate in the eyes of foreign powers. Secondly, America had to appear as if we were ready to defend ourselves at any given moment, and were a country without a Navy until 1798. Once again, he saw a multifaceted picture and realized that as Secretary of the Treasury, he could create a stream of income through tariff collections and legitimatize our country at the same time. He was well aware that the European kings were simply waiting for us to fail, and by providing our country with a Coast Guard, he truly safeguarded our successful future.
